Age-Appropriate Exercise for Dogs and Cats

Exercise needs change dramatically as pets age. Too little leads to obesity and muscle loss; too much can cause injury and pain.

Dogs: Exercise by Life Stage

Puppy (0-1 year)

5 min per month of age, 2x/day

Over-exercise is a real risk. Avoid forced running until growth plates close (12-18 months). The 5-minute rule: 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day.

Adult (1-7 years)

30-60 min/day (breed dependent)

Activity needs vary enormously by breed. A Border Collie needs 2+ hours of vigorous daily exercise; a Bulldog may need 20-30 minutes. Provide both physical exercise and mental stimulation.

Senior (7+ years)

20-30 min, 2-3x/day (gentle)

Shorter, more frequent walks are better than one long walk. Watch for post-exercise limping, reluctance to get up the next morning, or excessive panting as signs of over-exertion.

Cats: Activity by Life Stage

Kitten (0-1 year)

Multiple play sessions per day (5-10 minutes each). Wand toys, feather toys, and puzzle feeders support physical and mental development.

Adult (1-10 years)

Two 10-15 minute interactive play sessions per day. Prevent obesity β€” weigh monthly and adjust food if weight drifts up.

Senior (10+ years)

Lower-intensity play β€” gentler wand movements, puzzle feeders, calm sessions. Even 5-minute sessions per day maintain muscle and joint flexibility. Provide ramps so senior cats do not skip enrichment due to mobility issues.
